The Many Advantages of LIVE Sessions
One of the beauties of StarNet LIVE Sessions is that the LIVE server component can be installed on most Linux and Unix OS platforms and can be used by both X-Win32 on Windows PC clients and LinuxLIVE on Linux and Solaris 10 client. The LIVE server allows Windows and Linux users the ability to run persistent LIVE Sessions on remote X host servers. LIVE Sessions allow users to reconnect to their applications on the remote Unix and Linux host(s) after an otherwise fatal network, power or system crash. In addition, LIVE Sessions offer the ability to suspend and resume sessions, move sessions between computers, and share sessions with other users. With StarNet's free LIVE Console solution, those who have a Linux workstation in the office and a Windows PC at home can also re-display their native Linux console on the Windows machine.

The chart above shows some of the things you can do with LIVE Sessions:

1. On the Office Windows PC, X-Win32 connects to X applications on either the application host or on Linux PCs. The user can suspend those sessions and resume them on a Linux/Windows PC at home.
2. With LinuxLIVE, the Linux user suspends applications running on the local machine and on the remote host and resumes them on another Linux or Windows PC on the LAN or at home.
3. Linux and Windows PCs can share the same session.
4. Using LIVE Console, the Linux user can redisplay the console desktop on a Windows machine at home.
5. The Windows PC at home can connect to the LIVE server on a secure gateway server from which an SSH connection is made to applications on the host or Linux PC.
6. The Windows user at home can remotely start an application hosted on his Linux PC in the Office, suspend it and resume that session with LinuxLIVE on the Linux machine at work.
   

Recovering Crashed Sessions
With traditional remote X server sessions, whenever the workstation loses its connection to the remote Linux or Unix host, the remote session dies. Running a LIVE Session, users simply reconnect to the session as the LIVE Server component (installed on the remote host) keeps the session running when it receives a disconnect signal from the Windows or Linux workstation.

Suspend-Resume
LIVE Sessions offer the ability for the user to manually "suspend" a session (at the end of a work day) and resume it later (the next morning). In reality, the session is not really suspended as the application continues to run on the remote host. The term "disconnect" is more accurate, but suspend has become the standard term for this kind of functionality.

Session Mobility
LIVE Sessions can be started on one workstation and resumed on another. This can be done in several ways:

• Set up an identical session on the second computer where X-Win32 or LinuxLIVE is installed. The user then suspends the session on the first machine and resumes the session on the second. It does not matter where the second PC is or what OS platform (Windows or Linux) it runs. Since LIVE Sessions run over an encrypted tunnel by default, you can even resume from home to a server behind a corporate firewall.
• Use X-Win32 Flash. This product allows you to install and run X-Win32 from a standard USB flash drive. You can suspend the session on your office PC, take the USB key to a second PC, boot X-Win32 from the USB drive, and resume the session.

Session Sharing
LIVE Sessions offer the ability to allow other Windows and Linux users to connect to a "master" session. This way, multiple people can collaborate on a project. Each invited guest can take control of the keyboard and mouse in order to provide his/her input on the project.

Fast Over Slow Internet Connections
Running a full Unix/Linux desktop over an Internet connection, even at DSL or Cable speed, has never been feasible as the operation would be unacceptably slow. LIVE Sessions use a highly efficient protocol in addition to compressing the data. As a result, LIVE Sessions allow you to run a remote Linux or Unix desktop at LAN-like speed over most Internet connections.

LIVE Console
Engineers and others are increasingly using Linux workstations in their office, but only have access to Windows notebooks and home PCs when away from the office. StarNet's LIVE Console solution (which is built into the LIVE server) allows a Linux user to suspend his native Linux console desktop and all of the local and remote applications it is running. Then, at home, using the LIVE session connection, the desktop can be re-displayed onto the machine. Even VNC cannot perform this functionality, as VNC can only re-display a desktop that is displayed through the VNC client.
